Corralling the Rats with Sapwood on “It’s A Wormbrain World” Theme

Wormbrain World has always felt like we deserved our very own theme song, but much like any worthwhile nickname, you really shouldn’t be coming up with your own personal jingle. Luckily, lo-fi indie punk band Sapwood from Millville, NJ felt compelled to record one for us at the start of this year. Jason Brown (who is the main vein involved with the creative project, alongside their friends Aubrey Hickman and Sean Sanderlin) slid into the Wormbrain DMs — only now, a full Earth season later, are we ready to share it with our readers and listeners.

Brown’s original message to us said, “I made a wormbrain song cuz i kept singing it to myself all the time lol maybe you can use it for something one day lmao,” as we copy+paste quote verbatim here.

That “something” has become what will be an ongoing and evolving compilation called How To Build A Wormbrain [In Progress], collecting similarly unsolicited Wormbrain World audio tributes like this.

The track listing is only one song so far… and that song is only twenty seconds long… but it’s a raucous and energetic start to what we hope will gradually snowball to be a much larger thing.

Before you click play, consider that it could be the introduction to a television series — Jason Brown told us that their W.W theme is “about this young rat tamer who has been corralling the rats in their basement in hopes to start their own rat circus one day. The kid’s name is Wormson. They’re friend’s with a local CD bootlegger who works at the flea market and gives Wormson all the best bootlegs. They get into a lot of little adventures in their small town together. It’s all about friendship and rats.” Much like life itself.

Sapwood find themselves in a spurt of peachy, sweet, fuzzy garage rock on “It’s A Wormbrain World” that tells you as much as you need to know about Wormbrain, but only offers a taste of the broad Modest Mouse, Daniel Johnston, and Pavement soaked sound the band captures on their own 22-track album Dinosaurs on the Shelf, TV Smiles, & Outer Space, which is just the latest in a multi-year backlog of self-released bedroom pop nuggets.

It’s all about friendship and rats.
