Perhaps Nothing At All with Pine Barons about “Blue Dolphin” [Music Video Premiere]
“I’ve been collecting old VHS cameras for a long time now, it’s one of my favorite ways to shoot these days,” said Alex Beebe, keyboardist of Philadelphia, PA pop phenoms Pine Barons and director of the band’s new “Blue Dolphin” music video. Wormbrain World spoke with the band about their latest single and its quintessential MTV throwback visual accompaniment, both premiering today on W.W online courtesy of their fellow Philly local label Grind Select! “It’s a great way to get an aesthetic and nostalgic look without the pressure of having expensive video gear and the mental load of having to do it ‘right.' References include music videos by Fishmans, Radiohead, Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, R.E.M.“
“We were going for the idea of making a classic ‘band’ music video with blissful vibes — looking back on some classic 90s music videos for outfit inspirations,” shared KC Abrams, Pine Barons’ frontperson and multi-instrumentalist, as well as producer and engineer. “The outdoor performances felt very epic to shoot, especially the bridge shots. It was a windy afternoon and the temperature was just right.”

While the song is perfectly polished pop and radiates “good vibes” on the surface, the lyrics maybe less so… or maybe more so? “It’s a conversation with a ghost about life and death from a sort of daoistic or pantheistic perspective. That is just what they mean to me though.” Interpretation welcome, Abram told Wormbrain. “To some, the lyrics might mean something completely different or perhaps nothing at all, and I like that too.”
"For this song in particular, the music came first along with the melody. Although there were certain lines that came at the same time as the melody that sort of set the tone for the rest of the lyrics — ‘… you can’t avoid the weather’ and “everything in the water, sinks in the water.’ The lyrics are very simple in both ‘Blue Dolphin’ and ‘Frantic Francis’. My older songs have a lot of lyrics, but I’ve been more drawn to this style of writing lately,” reflected Abrams.
“The title comes from the book ‘Island of the Blue Dolphins’.” they also shared. As far as whether the band’s set of singles are part of a larger release or will stand alone in their growing discography, Abrams speculated “That is still up in the air at the moment, but I do feel like something larger is forming beneath the surface.”
Wormbrain World asked Alex Beebe of Pine Barons to think of their favorite dolphins, and they told us:
PB: Ecco the Dolphin - Ecco the Dolphin is a no-brainer. The games were near impossible back before the Internet or forums like GameFAQs existed, not because it was a hard game but because of the complete lack of direction. SEGA pushed this game so hard that just about every genesis owner had a copy. The soundtrack by Spencer Nilsen is fantastic and something I think about regularly. Ecco is the ONLY dolphin to have ever traveled through time, might I add. Honorable mention: Willy — orca but still dolphin?
