Draining D.I.Y. (Pt. 2) with Fog Lake and the TRASH STARS! Compilation [Single Premiere]
“I love Bladee because he’s one of those artists that I didn’t get at first, but when I finally got it, I got it, y’know?” ambient singer-songwriter Aaron Powell of Fog Lake told Wormbrain about his contribution to the TRASH STARS! benefit compilation,“…and then there was no going back.”
Fog Lake’s interpretation of “Hero of my Story 3style3” from Bladee’s drainer-favorite 333 (2000) is the latest cover to be shared from W.W’s tribute compilation, which Powell says, “was the first song of his that made me have that revelation, so I decided to give it a shot.” You can listen to their take on the song below:
Like the other contributions shared early (see also: Lavagxrl’s “Don’t Worry” on W.W), Powell’s cover wrings a bleakness out of the original Bladee track, while trudging along new trails for the artist. Still, the track maintains the tried and true slowcore, bedroom sound established in Fog Lake’s latest album Tragedy Reel (2021) and its near decade of preceding discography.
The tribute playlist collects a dozen inventive takes on the music of Swedish genre-bender Bladee, which can be heard below ahead of the compilation’s full release on New Year’s Eve, 12/31/21.
While potentially far from a household name, depending on your household at least, Bladee’s influence finds its way entwined across independent music, as is evident in the roster the tracklist boasts — including the aforementioned Canadian lo-fi project Fog Lake and New England rapper/singer/producer Lavagxrl alongside peers Bedbug, Field Medic, Pictoria Vark, Swim Camp, and others. All proceeds from the dozen covers collected by Wormbrain will be donated to Student Immigrant Movement.
W.W: What is Wormbrain?
AP: Wormbrain is the future, Metallica is the past.
W.W: Thank you for sharing with Wormbrain.
