Losing Friends with theadoore’s “Know Yr Enemies” [Single Premiere]

“I honestly cannot say that I have had many enemies in my life — mostly out of a genuine phobia of conflict, not because I’m a perfect person.”

Grace Ward of Providence, RI’s resident jazz-tinged indie folk project theadoore told Wormbrain when discussing their latest single “Know Yr Enemies” and the once eponymous act’s recent name change. The song was originally released as a cassette tape exclusive from their debut EP, tears for the time keeper, released on Disposable America last year. Now, over a year later, the band shares their trippy, twangy, under-heard treat of a track digitally via W.W for the very first time, available a day before its full streaming release September 16th, 2022! “[The single] is one of the less metaphorical songs I’ve ever written,” Ward shared. "About a year ago, I went through a breakup with a person that I am actually terrified of seeing again. Living in the smallest New England city got me wishing there was a way to undo a relationship whether it’s good or bad and just turn into strangers again. Maybe that’s petty of me, but damn! It sucks to have an enemy when you live in a place so small that you see everyone you’ve ever met before noon, just because you decided to buy a coffee.”

As far as the motivations for changing the band’s name, Ward (who is also known for their membership in Houndsteeth, Queen Crony, Squitch, and beyond) confessed, “I have been playing Theadoore sets as a duo these days, so it made sense to have a project name so that it didn’t feel so Grace-centric. I wish there were a deeper meaning, but honestly Theodore is just a name I’ve loved and wish I was named since I was a kid. Theadoore came to me very quickly once I realized how much I hated seeing my actual name on show posters and also was beginning to realize I wanted a more gender-neutral name associated with my music.”

Knowing that this new song is actually the crumbs of a former era of the highly improvisational theadoore, Wormbrain World is both delighted to share it and eager to hear where the project finds them in the coming months or years.
