A Few Words from Trash Girl about Rock N Roll

“Isn’t life and music just the process of figuring out what kind of guy you want to be?” asked electronic pop and folk freakster Shaughnessy Jones of New York project trash girl. “Right now, I guess I’d say I wanna be some guy who is a silly rock and roller.”

“To me, trash girl is absolutely some kind of guy, though I haven’t figure out exactly who yet. Kind of like Wormbrain.”

Wormbrain spoke to Jones about the “some guy” she finds herself as now today on the day of trash girl’s Rock N Roll record release. The solo project has been releasing music since 2017, hopscotching through genres across time. From cowpoke on a mountain to cog in the machine, trash girl bops along blissfully to the undefinable beauty of existing. Yet even when it goes coldly mechanical or overwhelmingly noisy, trash girl’s discography stinks of humanity (complimentary) and Rock N Roll maintains this legacy.

“It’s still really tame, but this felt like the first album where I allowed myself to be a little noisier. The other big change is that for the first time I’m thinking about starting a trash girl band,” they shared, looking at the present and future of trash girl. “That’s a big deal for me, because the actual construction and execution of these songs has always been a really private process for me, with a few exceptions like how Dylan (from bedbug) produced my last album. I’m trying to get more comfortable with sharing that process and collaborating with other people now.” More than one person in a band called trash girl? That is bound to get confusing.

After returning to the stage and playing a live show earlier this month for the first time in years, Jones tells us, “I’ve gotten so used to the perfectionism of recording that I forgot how messy live performances can be. In most ways I feel like playing and being at shows is the same as before, but I feel out of practice. There’s a million variables that are idiosyncratic to whatever space you’re playing in, but I think the only way you get better at that is do more of it, so cheers to that.” Cheers indeed, trash girl.
